🌱 Ruby Raspberry heritage

Its parentage is:

Heritage × Titan → Ruby (‘Watson’)

The cross was made specifically to develop a large-fruited autumn-bearing raspberry. A selected seedling, NY 114, eventually became the cultivar ‘Watson’, marketed under the trademark RUBY™.

⭐ Why Ruby is special

Very large red berries — historically reported around 50% larger than Heritage.
Bright red fruit
Firm, relatively dry berries that handle well and don’t bleed easily.
Good for fresh eating and selling
Primocane/fall-bearing, so fruit is produced on new-season canes.
Similar yield and flavour to Heritage, but with larger fruit.
Canes are vigorous but more spreading/trailing than Heritage, so trellising is recommended.

😋 Taste

Ruby has a pleasant raspberry flavour, broadly similar to Heritage, but it is generally described as mild rather than exceptionally sweet or intensely flavoured. Its major advantage is fruit size, firmness and handling quality, rather than superior flavour.

⚠️ Important for Perth

Ruby needs excellent drainage. It has susceptibility to Phytophthora root rot, so I would avoid heavy, waterlogged soil and consider a raised bed or very well-drained growing mix in Perth. It also benefits from a trellis because the canes are not as upright as Heritage.
