Botanical name: Mangifera indica âR2E2â
Origin: Australian-bred mango, selected at Bowen, Queensland. It became an important commercial variety because of its large fruit, firm flesh and good shelf life.
Main features
- Fruit: Large, round to oval mangoes, commonly around 600 gâ1 kg, with some fruit exceeding 1 kg.
- Skin: Yellow-orange with an attractive orange-red blush.
- Flesh: Yellow, firm and low in fibre.
- Flavour: Sweet, fresh and mild rather than intensely aromatic.
- Seed: Relatively small, giving a good amount of edible flesh.
- Harvest: Generally mid to late season, with Australian retail availability around OctoberâFebruary.
- Pollination: Self-fertile, so one tree can produce fruit.

R2E2 mangoes need a warm, sunny position. For Perth, plant in:
- Full sun with at least 6â8 hours of sunlight
- A warm, sheltered location protected from strong winds
- Free-draining soilâavoid areas where water sits around the roots
- Rich soil improved with compost and organic matter
- Regular deep watering during Perthâs hot, dry summer
A grafted R2E2 is particularly useful for home gardens because it can fruit much earlier than a seed-grown mango.

R2E2 makes an attractive tropical/fruiting feature tree. Its dense evergreen foliage provides shade and the large, colourful fruit adds strong visual appeal. Give it plenty of room as the mature tree can become substantial; pruning can help maintain a manageable size.
