🌱 Description
Pittosporum tenuifolium is an attractive evergreen screening and hedging plant with small, glossy green leaves and a naturally dense growth habit. It responds very well to pruning, making it suitable for creating a neat, formal hedge or a softer natural privacy screen.
It is particularly useful for screening fences, neighbouring properties and unwanted views, while adding year-round greenery to the garden.
☀️ Care in Perth
Sun: Full sun to part shade. Morning sun or a position with some afternoon protection can be beneficial during Perth’s hottest weather.
Soil: Plant into well-drained soil. Improve poor soil with quality compost or soil improver before planting.
Water: Water deeply and regularly during establishment. Once established, water deeply during prolonged hot and dry periods. Avoid constantly wet soil.
Fertiliser: Apply a slow-release fertiliser for shrubs or hedges in spring. Water well after fertilising.
Mulch: Apply organic mulch around the root zone to retain moisture during Perth’s dry summers. Keep mulch away from the trunk.
Pruning: Prune regularly to encourage dense branching and maintain the desired height. Light, frequent trimming produces a much thicker screen.
📏 Planting Distance
For a dense privacy hedge, plant approximately 60–80 cm apart. For a faster, fuller screen, closer spacing can be used, depending on plant size and your desired finished width.
