Olea europaea ‘Correggiolo’ is a traditional Italian olive cultivar, particularly associated with Tuscany, valued for its attractive evergreen foliage and high-quality olives. It is primarily known as an oil-producing variety.
🌿 Main features
🫒 Fruit & oil
Correggiolo is appreciated for producing high-quality extra virgin olive oil, often described as fruity and aromatic, with characteristic green, herbaceous notes and a pleasant bitterness and pepperiness when harvested at the right stage.
For home gardeners, the olives can also be harvested and processed, but they cannot normally be eaten directly from the tree because fresh olives are naturally very bitter and require curing.
☀️ Care in Perth
Position: Full sun — ideally 6+ hours of direct sunlight.
Soil: Well-drained soil is important. Olive trees tolerate relatively poor soils once established.
Water: Water deeply during establishment. Mature trees are quite drought tolerant, although irrigation during flowering and fruit development can improve performance.
Fertiliser: Apply a balanced or olive-specific controlled-release fertiliser in spring. Avoid excessive nitrogen if your priority is fruit rather than vigorous foliage.
Pruning: Prune after fruiting or during winter to maintain an open canopy. Remove suckers and unwanted inward-growing branches.
Perth tip: It is a very good fit for Perth’s hot, dry summers and Mediterranean climate. Good drainage and plenty of sunlight are the keys to success.
🌳 Landscaping importance
Correggiolo can be used as both a productive fruit tree and an ornamental evergreen tree.
