Nagami Cumquat (Citrus margarita) is one of the most popular kumquat varieties for home gardens and pots. It produces small, oval, bright-orange fruits that are excellent for eating whole, preserving and making marmalade.

🌱 Best planting position in Perth
Nagami Kumquat performs best in:
- Full sun — ideally 6+ hours of direct sunlight.
- Well-drained soil.
- Protection from strong afternoon winds when young.
- A large pot if growing on a patio, balcony or courtyard.
In Perth’s hot, dry summers, consistent watering is particularly important, especially for young trees and container-grown plants.
🌿 Planting method
- Choose a sunny position with good drainage.
- Dig a hole approximately twice the width of the root ball.
- Mix compost or well-aged organic matter through the surrounding soil.
- Plant at the same depth as the nursery pot—don’t bury the trunk.
- Water deeply after planting.
- Apply a 5–8 cm layer of mulch, keeping it away from the trunk.
🌸 Fertilising
Feed during the active growing period with a citrus fertiliser containing nitrogen and trace elements.
A practical Perth approach:
- Late winter/early spring: Main citrus feed.
- Spring: Additional feed if growth is weak.
- Summer: Light supplementary feeding if needed.
- Reduce fertilising in winter.
Avoid putting large amounts of fertiliser directly against the trunk or roots.
✂️ Pruning
Nagami doesn’t require heavy pruning.
- Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches.
- Remove shoots growing from below the graft if it is grafted.
- Lightly shape after fruiting if necessary.
- Keep the centre reasonably open for sunlight and airflow.
- Avoid excessive pruning before summer, as this can expose branches to intense Perth sun.
🍊 How to eat the fruit
One of Nagami’s special characteristics is that the skin is sweeter than the flesh. Wash the fruit and eat it whole, including the skin.
