Melaleuca rhaphiophylla, commonly called Swamp Paperbark, is a beautiful Western Australian native tree naturally associated with wetlands, waterways and seasonally wet areas. It has attractive papery bark, narrow foliage and creamy-white bottlebrush-like flowers.
🌿 Main features
🌳 Landscaping importance
This is an excellent choice for Australian native landscapes, particularly where a larger tree is wanted. Its attractive bark gives year-round interest, while the flowering adds seasonal colour.
It is especially useful for:
☀️ Care in Perth
Position: Full sun to part shade.
Water: This species naturally occurs in wet environments, so it performs best with regular access to moisture, particularly while establishing. It is not the best choice for a very dry, unirrigated position.
Soil: Moist soils are preferred; it can tolerate periodically waterlogged conditions.
Fertiliser: Generally low-maintenance. If required, use a low-phosphorus native fertiliser at the recommended rate.
Pruning: Usually requires little pruning. Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches and prune lightly to maintain the desired shape.
Mulching: A layer of organic mulch helps retain moisture during Perth’s hot summers. Keep mulch away from direct contact with the trunk.
⭐ Why choose Melaleuca rhaphiophylla?
Its biggest advantages are its Western Australian heritage, attractive paper-like bark, wildlife value and ability to perform in moist locations. For a Perth property with a damp area, drainage swale or access to irrigation, it can be a particularly attractive native tree.
