🍈 Main features
- Large, round to oval fruit, commonly around 40–60 mm on well-grown trees.
- Crisp, juicy flesh with an excellent sweet flavour.
- Can be eaten fresh while yellow-green, or left to develop reddish-brown colour for a sweeter, softer flavour.
- Excellent fresh or dried as a Chinese red date.
- Self-fertile, so one tree can produce fruit.
- Grafted trees can fruit considerably earlier than seedlings.
📏 Size
A grafted Li can eventually reach around 2–4 m, but regular pruning can keep it around 2 m, making harvesting much easier.
☀️ Growing in Perth
Li jujube is an excellent choice for Perth’s hot, dry summers. Give it:
- Full sun
- Well-drained soil
- Good airflow
- Regular watering while establishing
- Deep watering during fruit development
Once established, jujubes are very heat and drought tolerant.
🌱 Planting preparation
Prepare a large planting hole and incorporate well-aged compost or manure with good-quality soil. Ensure the site drains freely—avoid areas where water remains around the roots.
A thick organic mulch will help maintain moisture during Perth’s summer, but keep mulch away from the trunk.
🍓 Pollination
‘Li’ is self-fertile, so a second tree isn’t essential. However, having another compatible jujube variety nearby can improve fruit size and overall production.
✂️ Care
- Feed with a quality fruit-tree fertiliser as growth begins in spring.
- Water regularly through flowering and fruit development.
- Reduce watering once fruit is approaching maturity if conditions are dry, while avoiding severe moisture stress.
- Prune after fruiting to control height and maintain an open canopy.
- Remove unwanted suckers from around the base.
🍂 Winter
Jujube is deciduous. It naturally loses its leaves and becomes dormant during winter. New growth returns in spring.
