🌸 Description
Helichrysum ‘Red Jewel’ is a compact, low-growing evergreen plant prized for its beautiful velvety silver-grey foliage and clusters of striking deep red to ruby-red flower buds. The buds open to attractive papery pinkish flowers, creating a wonderful contrast against the silver foliage.
It forms a neat, dense mound and is particularly suitable for small gardens, pots, rockeries and low-water landscapes.

⭐ Important Features
🌱 Planting Procedure
1. Choose the position
Plant in a full-sun location, ideally receiving around 6+ hours of direct sunlight.
2. Prepare the soil
Use a well-drained soil. Red Jewel does not perform well in constantly wet or poorly drained conditions.
For Perth’s heavier soils, particularly clay, improve drainage by creating a raised planting area or incorporating suitable organic matter and drainage material rather than leaving the roots in waterlogged soil.
3. Planting
Dig a hole approximately twice the width of the root ball. Position the plant at the same depth as it was in the pot, backfill and water thoroughly.
4. Mulching
Apply a light layer of mulch around the plant while keeping mulch away from the stem.
5. Spacing
For a natural mass planting, allow roughly 35–45 cm between plants, depending on how quickly you want the area to fill.
🏡 Landscaping Importance
‘Red Jewel’ is particularly useful where you need colour without a large plant.
Excellent for:
Its silver foliage provides excellent contrast with green-leaved plants, while the red flowers add a strong seasonal colour accent. It has also been specifically recommended for coastal and Perth-type conditions.
☀️ Care in Perth
Sun: Full sun is best.
Water: Water regularly while establishing. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant. During Perth’s extreme summer heat, give a deep soak when required rather than frequent light watering.
Soil: Well-drained soil is essential.
Fertiliser: Apply a quality slow-release fertiliser in spring; some growers recommend spring and autumn applications.
Pruning: Lightly trim after the main flowering period to maintain a compact, bushy shape.
Summer: Protect newly planted specimens from severe heat until established.
Drainage: Avoid constantly wet roots.
Perth tip: This is a particularly attractive choice for sunny, dry and coastal Perth gardens, but drainage is important, especially where soil is heavy clay.
