Main features

Attractive clusters of small, creamy-white flowers in spring to early summer.
Flowers have a sweet, fragrant aroma.
Flowers can be used to make elderflower cordial, syrups, teas and desserts when correctly identified and prepared.
Later produces dark purple-black elderberries, depending on variety and pollination.
Deciduous shrub with a natural, cottage-garden appearance.

Growing in Perth

Prefers full sun to part shade.
Needs good drainage but appreciates regular moisture, particularly during Perth’s hot, dry summers.
Protect from extreme afternoon heat when young.
Improve soil with compost or organic matter before planting.
Mulch around the plant to help retain moisture.

Approximate size

Around 3–6 m high and 2–4 m wide if allowed to grow naturally, although pruning can keep it much smaller.
