🌸 Main Features
- Evergreen flowering shrub with attractive, glossy dark-green foliage.
- Produces abundant single or semi-double flowers in white, pink, and red shades.
- Flowers mainly from autumn through winter, adding colour when many other plants are dormant.
- Compact, bushy growth habit, making it excellent for hedges, screening, borders and feature planting.
- Can be pruned and shaped to suit smaller gardens.
- Generally more sun-tolerant than many other camellias.
☀️ Sunlight Requirements
- Best in morning sun or filtered/partial sun.
- Can tolerate more sun than Camellia japonica, especially with adequate moisture.
- In Perth’s hot summer conditions, provide afternoon protection from intense western sun where possible.
- Mulching helps protect the roots from heat and moisture loss.
🌿 Care at Perth
- Water deeply and regularly, particularly during hot, dry summers.
- Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
- Apply a 5–8 cm layer of organic mulch, keeping it away from the trunk.
- Feed in spring after flowering with a camellia/azalea fertiliser or suitable slow-release fertiliser.
- Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth.
- Protect young plants from extreme afternoon heat and drying winds.
🌱 Soil Requirements
Camellias prefer acidic, well-drained soil, ideally around pH 5.5–6.5.
For Perth gardens:
- Improve sandy soil with quality organic matter and compost.
- Use an acid-loving plant/camellia potting mix for containers.
- Ensure excellent drainage—camellia roots dislike constantly wet soil.
- Avoid heavy applications of lime because it can raise soil pH.
