Botanical name: Vaccinium ashei ‘Premier’
Type: Rabbiteye blueberry
Premier is a vigorous, productive, early-season rabbiteye blueberry producing medium-to-large, attractive light-blue berries with good sweetness and flavour. It is a good choice for warmer Australian climates and can perform well in Perth with the right soil and watering.

☀️ Growing in Perth
Choose a position with morning sun and some protection from Perth’s intense afternoon summer heat. Blueberries need excellent drainage and strongly acidic growing conditions. Container growing can make controlling soil pH much easier.
🌱 Planting preparation
For garden beds:
- Use an acid-loving/blueberry soil mix.
- Improve drainage if the soil is heavy.
- Maintain an acidic pH, ideally around 4.5–5.5.
- Add organic mulch around the plant, keeping it away from the main stem.
For pots, use a premium acidic potting mix designed for blueberries/acid-loving plants and a large pot with good drainage.
💧 Care
- Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during Perth summer.
- Avoid letting the root zone completely dry out.
- Apply a slow-release fertiliser formulated for blueberries or acid-loving plants.
- Mulch to conserve moisture and keep the roots cooler.
- Prune older and weak branches after establishment to encourage productive new growth.
🐝 Pollination
Premier benefits significantly from cross-pollination with another rabbiteye blueberry. Brightwell is a particularly suitable companion, and planting compatible rabbiteye varieties together can improve fruit production.
🏡 Landscaping importance
Premier is excellent for edible gardens, backyard orchards, raised garden beds, courtyard gardens and large pots. It can also be planted as a productive informal edible hedge.
