How to grow Blue Java Banana in Perth
☀️ Position:
Choose full sun with plenty of warmth. A north-facing position protected from strong winds is ideal. Perth’s strong winds can tear the large banana leaves, so some shelter is beneficial.
🌱 Soil:
Plant into rich, fertile, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. Avoid areas where water remains around the roots.
Before planting, improve the soil with compost or well-rotted manure and mulch heavily around the plant.
💧 Water:
Blue Java needs regular moisture, particularly during Perth’s hot, dry summer. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Deep watering is preferable to frequent light watering.
🌿 Fertiliser:
Bananas are heavy feeders. Apply a complete fertiliser regularly during the warmer growing months, with additional potassium particularly useful as the plant approaches flowering and fruiting.

Why Blue Java is special
Blue Java is much more than an ordinary banana. Its combination of silvery-blue immature fruit, creamy vanilla-like flavour, attractive tropical foliage and relatively good cold tolerance makes it one of the most interesting banana varieties for home gardens.
The fruit is especially unusual because the blue colour is visible while the bananas are developing, before the skin changes to yellow during ripening.
