🍇 Blackberry ‘Chester Thornless’
Botanical name: Rubus fruticosus ‘Chester’
Common name: Chester Thornless Blackberry
‘Chester’ is a vigorous, high-yielding, semi-erect blackberry with thornless canes and delicious dark berries. It is a popular choice for home gardens because harvesting is much easier than with thorny varieties.
🌿 Main features
☀️ Growing in Perth
Choose a sunny to partly shaded, protected position. In Perth’s hot summers, some protection from intense afternoon heat can help, particularly during fruit development. Use fertile, well-draining soil and maintain regular moisture during flowering and fruiting.
Trellising is strongly recommended because Chester produces long, vigorous canes.
✂️ Pruning
Chester is a floricane-fruiting blackberry, meaning the canes generally fruit on their second-year growth. After fruiting, remove the old fruiting canes and train the new canes onto the trellis for the following season.
