Philodendron Rojo Congo \ Philodendron

description A shrub-like evergreen, Rojo Congo Philodendron’s new leaves unfurl a shiny red and then mature to a dark green with a reddish cast. It is considered a “self-heading” Philodendron, that is, it does not crawl or climb in a vine-like manner. Its leaves appear from a root clump on long, dark red, firm but fleshy stems. The leaf blade is long and lance-shaped, first red when young and deepening to reddish dark green. The leaf petiole stems remain red to dark red. Grow Rojo Congo Philodendron in a fertile, moist but well-draining, non-alkaline soil in partial to full shade in a frost free region. Dappled sunlight is acceptable, but midday sun will scorch the leaves. It is beautiful as an accent shrub in the front of a mixed shade border or grouped as a massed groundcover under a large tree. It may be grown indoors as a houseplant in bright indirect light. The leaf and stem juices of philodendron are poisonous and can cause skin irritation in some individuals. Grows to a height of 1m high and 1m wide.
